IrelandOffline rebukes claims of being ill-informed

IrelandOffline today reacted angrily to claims that its comprehensive study of the technology at the core of the recently announced National Broadband Scheme (NBS) were “outdated” and “ill-informed” made by an unnamed spokeswoman for 3 Ireland.

When 3 Ireland were announced as the winner of the NBS tender, and details of the technology to be used emerged, IrelandOffline prepared an independent study of the technology’s ability to meet the needs of rural broadband provision. IrelandOffline published this comprehensive document outlining our concerns about the suitability of 3g technology to satisfy the published requirements of the NBS.The document has been rejected by 3 Ireland saying these claims are “ill-informed and outdated” .

However, in the interests of all concerned, we in IrelandOffline call on 3 Ireland to publicly clarify their position and to explain exactly why these documents were dismissed in this offhand way. We further call on 3 Ireland to provide detailed technical specifications to back up their assertions as to what exactly what is outdated or ill-informed.

Furthermore we would like to test these claims but empirically and anecdotally, this can be done by supplying us with some USB “modems” and our engineers will run a published set of tests against them.

You needn’t bother asking for free modems, they’re no good.

Mine takes over an hour to connect sometimes and where’s the point in ringing a Mumbai call center to complain?

The current 3 mobile internet service is pathetic. Any customer that comes to me and asks is the relatively cheap cost compared to other fixed products worth it, I simply tell them no. Considering this is the commercial product they push in an area considered “covered” by 3g I’d stick to the dial up.

We purchased a contract with 3 last week and the engineer arrived today to carry out the installation. townland area of Thurles, Tipp. After testing he could not find a signal in our area despite the 3 website stating that the wireless broadband (NBS) is now active in our area. The Engineer from 3 went on to say that we will never get a signal unless a mast is erected in our area and sdvised satelite which we know is non existent. The dam cheek of 3 to have our townlad area NBS live and not even a 3 second signal could be obtained. I have complained yesterday to comreg and Minister Ryan’s office, what are the chances I get a reply..And more frustrating is that is is impossible to get a complaints department for 3. Thank you for the oppertunity to rant,

Very similar experience to Rachel above. Have been using 3 mobile BB on the train for a couple of years with reasonable results but it never worked at home.
Ads went up locally saying that NBS was now available.
Unfortunately the signal is highly localised. Drops from full signal on mobile to zero over a distance of 200 metres. So same here is that NBS is never going to be available.
The 3 NBS deal is and always will be a total copout.
